About Ken Payne

Ken Payne (1938–2012) was a celebrated Western artist whose work captured the spirit, history, and rugged beauty of the American Southwest. Born into a ranching family, he began his artistic journey as a painter, depicting the landscapes, cowboys, and Native peoples that defined the region he loved. Alongside his passion for art, Ken built a successful career as a pilot, flying for the commercial airline that would later become Continental Airlines. A devoted student of Western history, Ken spent decades researching the stories and people of the frontier. In the late 1970s, he turned his focus to bronze sculpture, ultimately creating nearly 150 works over more than forty years. His sculptures brought to life the drama, danger, humor, and humanity of the American West, earning him recognition as one of the foremost Western sculptors of his generation. Beyond his accomplishments as an artist, Ken was also an innovator and entrepreneur. He established bronze casting foundries in New Mexico, Arizona, and Colorado, and founded Mountain Trails Gallery, with fine art galleries in Santa Fe and Sedona. Known for his engaging storytelling and charismatic public sculpting demonstrations, Ken attracted audiences from around the world and was featured in the nationally televised program Sculpting with Ken Payne. Committed to historical accuracy, Ken amassed an extensive research library to ensure his portrayals of cowboys, mountain men, pioneers, and Native Americans reflected the authenticity of a disappearing West. His work is held in private and corporate collections throughout the United States and internationally. Ken Payne’s legacy endures through his influential body of work and through the artistic talents of his son, Vic Payne, and grandson, Dustin Payne, who continue the family tradition of Western art.
